Roulette Wheel Cake

Made for my sisters sister in-law (complicated hahaha) who is soon off to Las Vegas for a holiday!

Sarah is a very big fan of chocolate so naturally I had to make the cake as chocolatey as possible!  I made a chocolate sponge filled and covered with chocolate ganache.  This was then covered in a mixture of plain white and chocolate fondant which I lightly kneeded together to produce the wood effect for the roulette wheel.

Once the cake was made and covered I then went about creating the finishing touches.  The wheel spinner was made out of fimo as this sets hard when baked, then covered in a film of gold glitter.

The coloured section was then carefully created followed by the dice, cards and cheeky copy of the Las Vegas sign!

Frank from Cars Model

Another order from my flyer in a local shop!  I got home to find a message about a combine harvester…. Not sure how to do that but hey im game!  Called the lady back to discuss her requirements.  Not quite a straight forward cake order but definitely a challenge I was willing to try!

Frank is not a cake - he is a model to go on a cake.  My customer's grandson has an egg allergy so she wanted to make the cake.  He loves Frank from Cars (Disney film) so the plan was to make a cake for frank and friends to sit on top of.

Frank was modelled around shaped wood then covered and modelled out of Fimo (polymer clay).  The wheels were donated from a toy tractor!

I was really pleased with how Frank turned out, and I know the little boy I have made him for will have lots of fun plying with him after the cake has long gone!

Michael Jackson Disco Cake!

This was my first 'recommendation cake' order!  My friend who had the Belinda Bear cake was so impressed that she mentioned my talents to another friend who contacted me regarding a cake for her daughter's birthday.

Evie is a huge Michael Jackson fan and loves dancing.  Her birthday party theme is 'Disco', she loves mirror balls and glitter.

The cake was a chocolate sponge with chocolate buttercream.  The hat was made up from off cuts and covered with white then black fondant.

I found a silhouette of Michael Jackson which I used for the central image then built up around this.  The discs around the outside represent disco lights and also match the colours on the '6' candle.  To finish off I used silver balls to write 'Evie' and edge the cake.

Cricket bat and ball cake!

The second cake for Linda's order was for her son who is a huge cricket fan!
My original plan was to make a large rectangle cake and have a cricket bat and ball on top but I thought it would be much more impressive (and fun!) to make a life size cricket bat and ball, so here it is!
I made the rectangle cake and cut in half to make the general shape of the bat.  I had an extra 7" sandwich which I had baked intending to use with the triathlon cake which wasn't needed in the end so cut the handle and ball shapes out of this.
The bat was covered in white fondant which I had kneaded a little chocolate fondant in, to give the wood effect.  The handle and ball was covered in white then a thin layer of black and the ball covered in a red and black mix to give a deeper colour.

Triathlon Cake for Liz!

I had a 2 cake order after my cakes were seen on my facebook page!  This cake was made for a friend whom both Jamie and I have worked with in the past.  We also stay at her holiday home in Sidmouth from time to time so I wanted to make a really good job for her!
Linda's daughter had recently completed a triathlon so the obvious choice of cake was to show all of these events on one cake!
I made 2 round sponge cakes (1 smaller to sit on top of the larger) sandwiched with buttercream and covered with white fondant as a base.  Before I started with the fun part, I put a thin layer of blue for the sky then added various shades of green to give the impression of hills using texture and colour.  Once I had my base I added trees, I added the road then made spectators!  Finally I made models of a swimmer, the bike and rider then finally the runner heading towards the finish line!
The water effect on the top was blue royal icing left to set slightly then swirling in white royal icing just before it had set.  I'm really pleased with the results and hope Linda will be too!!!
