Barbie Cake for Jessica

I made this cake for my daughter Jessica's birthday, she is going through the 'I LOVE BARBIE' phase so I was more than happy to give this cake a try!!
I made 3 sponge cakes in ascending sizes which were sandwiched with pink (naturally!!) buttercream and carved to create the base of the dress.
This was then covered with a layer of white fondant then built up further with a selection of different pinks and lilacs to give the layered effect.
I then went mad with glitter and created various sizes and colours of flowers for the main body of the dress.  I then wrapped Barbie in clingfilm and carefully pushed her into the cake, building up a layer of fondant over her torso to create the bodice.
Jess was over the moon with her cake - even happier that she has ended up with another Barbie to add to her ever growing collection of dolls!  Looks like I'll be making one for my niece too...!!

Jessie from Toy Story Cake!

After offering to make a birthday cake for Gabby as a birthday gift, her mummy decided she would really like Jessie from Toy Story!
I baked a standard rectangle cake and mixed half as chocolate so when you cut into the cake, there will be brown spots like Jessie's cowhide chaps!!!
The cake was halved, filled and covered in chocolate buttercream then covered in a base layer of white fondant.  I then mixed up the colours required for the floor boards and background then set about making and hand painting Jessie to layer on top.

The hat is hand stitched for effect and the sherriff badge is also fondant covered in edible gold glitter for a little glitz!

My Mum's 70th Birthday Cake!

My toughest project yet but I pulled it off!!!

I wanted to make something really special for my Mum's 70th birthday so Jamie suggested making their house then we came up with the idea of making all of us to sit outside it too!!
And so to work…..
I baked the cake in sections, 1 rectangle sponge for the base then 4 square sponges to build up and shape.  I used buttercream as filling and covered with some white fondant then built up layers of colour for the different elements of the house.
The family are all made from fondant and totally edible - not that Mum will want to eat anybody, she'll probably want to keep it forever!!!
A great success - Mum and Dad couldn't believe their eyes!!  The kids couldn't wait to eat themselves - a little bizarre maybe but hey!!

Ipswich Town shirt & football Cake!

Made for Linda's son who turned 30 who loves football and is an avid Ipswich Town supporter!
For the cake I used my largest rectangular tin and a pudding bowl for the football.
I carved the shaped of the shirt and sandwiched with buttercream then covered with hand mixed blue fondant.  I then added white lines by rolling the fondant to get a decent thickness then edged the cake in the same way.
The badge was cut from a section of white fondant which I then hand painted, adding detail for the horse.  I then piped the lettering and edging.  The other lettering was cut from rolled out fondant to give a smoother and cleaner finish.
The football was initially covered with a layer of white fondant then I cut out a selection of white hexagons and black pentagons to make up the distinctive pattern of the football.

Roulette Wheel Cake

Made for my sisters sister in-law (complicated hahaha) who is soon off to Las Vegas for a holiday!

Sarah is a very big fan of chocolate so naturally I had to make the cake as chocolatey as possible!  I made a chocolate sponge filled and covered with chocolate ganache.  This was then covered in a mixture of plain white and chocolate fondant which I lightly kneeded together to produce the wood effect for the roulette wheel.

Once the cake was made and covered I then went about creating the finishing touches.  The wheel spinner was made out of fimo as this sets hard when baked, then covered in a film of gold glitter.

The coloured section was then carefully created followed by the dice, cards and cheeky copy of the Las Vegas sign!

Frank from Cars Model

Another order from my flyer in a local shop!  I got home to find a message about a combine harvester…. Not sure how to do that but hey im game!  Called the lady back to discuss her requirements.  Not quite a straight forward cake order but definitely a challenge I was willing to try!

Frank is not a cake - he is a model to go on a cake.  My customer's grandson has an egg allergy so she wanted to make the cake.  He loves Frank from Cars (Disney film) so the plan was to make a cake for frank and friends to sit on top of.

Frank was modelled around shaped wood then covered and modelled out of Fimo (polymer clay).  The wheels were donated from a toy tractor!

I was really pleased with how Frank turned out, and I know the little boy I have made him for will have lots of fun plying with him after the cake has long gone!

Michael Jackson Disco Cake!

This was my first 'recommendation cake' order!  My friend who had the Belinda Bear cake was so impressed that she mentioned my talents to another friend who contacted me regarding a cake for her daughter's birthday.

Evie is a huge Michael Jackson fan and loves dancing.  Her birthday party theme is 'Disco', she loves mirror balls and glitter.

The cake was a chocolate sponge with chocolate buttercream.  The hat was made up from off cuts and covered with white then black fondant.

I found a silhouette of Michael Jackson which I used for the central image then built up around this.  The discs around the outside represent disco lights and also match the colours on the '6' candle.  To finish off I used silver balls to write 'Evie' and edge the cake.

Cricket bat and ball cake!

The second cake for Linda's order was for her son who is a huge cricket fan!
My original plan was to make a large rectangle cake and have a cricket bat and ball on top but I thought it would be much more impressive (and fun!) to make a life size cricket bat and ball, so here it is!
I made the rectangle cake and cut in half to make the general shape of the bat.  I had an extra 7" sandwich which I had baked intending to use with the triathlon cake which wasn't needed in the end so cut the handle and ball shapes out of this.
The bat was covered in white fondant which I had kneaded a little chocolate fondant in, to give the wood effect.  The handle and ball was covered in white then a thin layer of black and the ball covered in a red and black mix to give a deeper colour.

Triathlon Cake for Liz!

I had a 2 cake order after my cakes were seen on my facebook page!  This cake was made for a friend whom both Jamie and I have worked with in the past.  We also stay at her holiday home in Sidmouth from time to time so I wanted to make a really good job for her!
Linda's daughter had recently completed a triathlon so the obvious choice of cake was to show all of these events on one cake!
I made 2 round sponge cakes (1 smaller to sit on top of the larger) sandwiched with buttercream and covered with white fondant as a base.  Before I started with the fun part, I put a thin layer of blue for the sky then added various shades of green to give the impression of hills using texture and colour.  Once I had my base I added trees, I added the road then made spectators!  Finally I made models of a swimmer, the bike and rider then finally the runner heading towards the finish line!
The water effect on the top was blue royal icing left to set slightly then swirling in white royal icing just before it had set.  I'm really pleased with the results and hope Linda will be too!!!

spilt cocktail engagement cake!

This cake order came after I placed a flyer in one of my local shop windows in Halstead.  I received a phone call on the Wednesday evening asking if it would be possible to do a cake for the coming weekend.
The girls were having an engagement party and had a 1920's black and pink theme!  They wanted cocktail glasses and asked if it would be possible to have one of them spilling their names onto the cake - so that's what I did!!!
The cake was a 3 layer rectangle sponge coloured pink (as requested!) with pink buttercream.  I used a layer of pink fondant then finally a thin layer of black for the top.  I pressed fondant into the spilt glass to give the effect of liquid spilling then rolled fondant to make the names.  Cake completed & delivered saturday morning - the girls loved it!x

Canon 50D cake!

This cake was made for my father in law.  Photography is one of his many hobbies so naturally a camera cake was the obvious idea to try!
For this cake I made one large rectangle cake cut into quarters then sandwiched back together with vanilla buttercream ready to carve into the camera shape.

For the lens and view finder I melted some clear glacier mints in the microwave and cut to shape to give the effect of glass.

I also made an additional lens body (not shown in picture) which I wrote on as a little extra!

blue bear cake!

The cake was baked in a specialist hired tin using a vanilla sponge which was cut in half and filled with strawberry jam and vanilla buttercream.
I then used white fondant to cover the cake entirely then piped the blue areas.  Extra white fondant was cut to size for the remaining areas then finished off with a ribbon and message.

hello kitty cake!

The cake was vanilla sponge cut to an oval shape using the remnants to form the ears.  The cake was split and filled with vanilla buttercream and jam then iced and decorated with fondant.

mickey mouse cake!

For this cake I made one large vanilla sponge for the main face and two smaller sponges for the ears.
The ears were sliced and sandwiched with strawberry jam and vanilla buttercream then covered with black fondant.  The face was covered with pink fondant then the black was shaped to form the features.  The edge of the cake was red with yellow stars.

lightning mcqueen cake!

Lightning McQueen from Disney's Cars was the obvious choice for our sons' second birthday.  Just like his Daddy, he has developed a taste for cars!!!
For this cake, I baked 2 square vanilla sponges which were sandwiched together with strawberry jam and vanilla buttercream then carved out into the shape of a car.
The car itself was completely covered in bright red fondant.  The rear spoiler was formed out of plastic and covered with fondant.  The wheels were actually Babybels covered with black fondant and the transfers were printed and drawn by hand, coated in sticky back plastic and stuck on using a jam and water solution giving the finish of the cake a slight sheen.

A great success - Charley popped when he saw it!

spider cake!

The cake was created for my husband's birthday.  I had already bought some spider cufflinks as one of his gifts so when shopping for wrapping paper and birthday cards, we found spiders everywhere and I thought it would be fun to continue the theme!
The Friendly Spider is a very naughty chocolate cake covered with melted chocolate, double cream (I KNOW!!!) and butter which is left to cool and harden slightly before using as filling and roughly icing the cake.
I then went on to break lightly 8 large Twix bars then with melted chocolate dripped onto the break to give the bend in the leg and finally two large white chocolate coins for his eyes.

Need I say, He didn't last long in our house!!!

belinda bear cake!

For this cake I made 2 vanilla sponge cakes.  The main body was cut, shaped and moulded from a rectangle sponge.  The head, arms and legs all from a square sponge.  The layers were all sandwiched with vanilla buttercream.
Once I had prepared the pieces, I then covered everything with a layer of buttercream and left to chill while I prepared the fondant.  I mixed chocolate fondant and white icing and covered each section attaching to the body and texturing the fondant to give the effect of fur.

sushi cake!

I started off making the sushi pieces.  The rice roll-up mixture was made with melted marshmallow, butter and rice crispies left to set in a greased tin.  They were then rolled up with wine gums and covered in dark green fondant.  The rest of the sushi was made using various shades of fondant to create fish-like slabs, egg and butterfly prawns.  At the front of the block is pickled ginger and wasabi.  The chopsticks and soy sauce bowl were also made from fondant and a little chocolate sauce!
The block was a chocolate sponge filled with chocolate buttercream then covered with chocolate fondant mixed with caramel brown fondant to form the wood effect base.  This was then finished off with some black food colouring streaks.

ariel the little mermaid cake

This cake was made for our daughter's 3rd birthday.  As you can see, like most little girls she has a love for Disney Princesses!  She had been very specific about what she wanted for her birthday, so I decided it was time to give the fondant a try!
The cake was baked in a specialist hired tin using a vanilla sponge which was cut in half and filled with strawberry jam and vanilla buttercream.
The main body of the cake was covered in a pale blue fondant for the sea and sky background.  The shading was created painting various shades for the water and rock that Ariel is perched on.  The hair was red buttercream which was piped on for effect.  Her body was flesh coloured and shaded for depth leaving the tail which was formed green fondant.  For the final touch, edible glitter was painted on her tail for a bit of glitz!

ruby wedding anniversary cake

For this cake, I baked two square vanilla sponges which were shaped and sandwiched with strawberry jam and vanilla buttercream.  I then covered the cake with white fondant and formed the 40 out of burgundy fondant flowers and hearts in various sizes.  I continued this theme around the corners of the cake and on the sides.

I was really pleased with the finished piece and my friend was over the moon!

hey diddle diddle baby shower cake

This cake was made for my sister in law who we arranged a surprise baby shower for!  I had been keen to try a 2-tier cake and this was the perfect opportunity so the creative juices began to flow!  I had the idea of basing the cake on a nursery rhyme and Hey Diddle Diddle seemed like the perfect challenge!

The cake was a hit!

For this cake, I baked 3 vanilla sponge cakes the smaller being just 5 inches across.  This was halved and sandwiched with vanilla buttercream then covered with a thin later of white fondant then blue for the night sky.  The stars were punched out and refilled with white fondant.  The base cake was sandwiched with strawberry jam and buttercream then I decided to try some baby coloured fondant to make up a quilt effect.  The characters were all hand-made by me using FIMO.
